Dame Nellie Melba (1861-1931)

Dame Nellie Melba, born as Helen Porter Mitchell, was a world-renowned operatic soprano. She was born in Richmond, Melbourne, but spent her early years in the town of Hamilton, located within Southern Grampians. Melba gained international acclaim for her performances in various opera houses around the world, including London's Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She is best known for her exceptional technique, beautiful voice, and memorable interpretations of roles, particularly those in operas by Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini.

Sir Douglas Mawson (1882-1958)

Sir Douglas Mawson was a renowned Australian geologist and Antarctic explorer. He was born in Shipley, Yorkshire, England, but later moved to the small town of Aberdeen within Southern Grampians. Mawson led the Australasian Antarctic Expedition from 1911 to 1914, which established Australia's presence in Antarctica. He made significant scientific discoveries and contributions to understanding the region's geology, earning him a knighthood for his extraordinary achievements. John Forrest (1847-1918)

John Forrest was a prominent Australian politician and explorer, known for his explorations of the Western Australian interior and his role in shaping the country's development. He was born in Bunbury, Western Australia, but as a child, his family relocated to the Victoria region, including parts within Southern Grampians. As an explorer, Forrest successfully led expeditions to areas that were previously uncharted, making valuable contributions to geographical knowledge and mapping. He later entered politics and served as the first Premier of Western Australia and as a government minister.
